Masses for the Persecuted

Further to the announcement of the FIUV of our project to arrange Masses for persecuted Christians around the world, I can now report a number of good responses.

In London, England, four High Masses a year will be offered, in a collaboration with the Latin Mass Society and the London Juventutem group, which have High Masses on the last Friday of each month in St Mary Moorfields in the City of London. They will be for the intention of persecuted Christians, where possible with a Votive Mass, on 24th April, 26th June, 25 September, and 18th December this year. The generosity of the Latin Mass Society has enabled these to accompanied with polyphony.

In Rome, Italy, Una Voce Italia will organise a quarterly Mass.

Una Voce Puerto Rico organised a Mass which took place on 22nd February.

In the Philippines, the Ecclesia Dei Society of Saint Joseph has helped to organize a two-day series of Masses and devotions for the Pope and for Persecuted Christians. This will be held on February 23-24 in the Holy Family Parish of the Diocese of Cubao in Metro Manila, which is the only parish in the whole Philippines with a Daily Traditional Latin Mass.

Una Voce Mexico has also promised to organise a Mass.

In the context of the persecution of Christians around the world, and particularly in the Middle East, to which Pope Francis has frequently drawn attention, Catholic attached to the Extraordinary Form will naturally wish to make use of public and liturgical prayer to address this problem. The Middle Ages saw the widespread use of various versions of the ‘Holy Land Clamor’ for the liberation of the Holy Land for three centuries from 1188, and the ‘Leonine Prayers’ for the ‘liberty and exaltation’ of the Church were introduced for another specific crisis, first by Pope Pius IX in 1859. The use of Votive Masses and Commemorations for persecuted Christians is to be commended; these can also be facilitated by the Holy See and local Ordinaries, by giving permission for them to be used on a larger number of days. . . . . .

The 24th in the FIUV Position Papers series, called “Prayers for the Persecuted Church and the Leonine Prayers” is now available in the FIUV Positio section.

Appeal for Masses for Persecuted Christians

The Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce is appealing for Masses to be celebrated for persecuted Christians around the world.

Catholics attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite and other ancient forms of the Mass will want to avail themselves, where possible, of the Votive Masses and Commemorations specifically for the Defence of the Church against Persecutors, and similar intentions, found in the ancient Missals.

We will be posting information about Traditional Masses being celebrated for this intention on this blog. Information about them can be put into the comments box of this blog.

Mass for Ebola victims in London

The Feoderatio Internationalis Una Voce (International Una Voce Federation, FIUV) has had an appeal from Una Voce South Africa, on behalf of all our African friends, that where possible Processions, Litanies, and Votive Masses be said for the victims of the Ebola epidemic which is ravaging many parts of Africa.

In response, the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, in conjunction with the International Una Voce Federation, is arranging Litanies of the Saints and a Sung Votive Mass 'in Time of Pestilence' at 6.30pm on Monday 16th February 2015 (feria before Shrove Tuesday) at Corpus Christi, Maiden Lane, London (click for a map) to be celebrated by Rev Fr Patrick Hayward OSA.

The FIUV calls on all its members and supporters to take up this example, at this time of suffering.

FIUV Delegation to the Holy See - November 2014

The President of the International Una Voce Federation (FIUV), Colonel James Bogle, at a General Audience on Wednesday 26 November 2014, handed to Pope Francis a report, in Spanish, on the growth of involvement of young people in the traditional Roman rite since the decree of Pope Benedict XVI, Summorum Pontificum.

Mr Bogle headed the FIUV Delegation to the Holy See to meet with the Holy Father and with senior prelates and cardinals to report on the work of FIUV and to request continuing support for the traditional Roman rite world-wide.

The Delegation consisted of:

• His Eminence Dario, Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, former President of the Ecclesia Dei Commission
• His Grace the Most Reverend Guido, Archbishop Pozzo, President of the Ecclesia Dei Commission

The Delegation met and later dined with:

• The Reverend Dom Dr Alcuin Reid OSB, monk of the Monastère Saint-Benoît in the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon, France, and author of numerous books on the traditional Roman rite

• The Reverend Andrew Southwell, former National Chaplain of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales

• Il Signore Professore Roberto, Barone di Mattei, Professor of Modern History and History of Christianity at the European University in Rome, where he is also Coordinator of the Degree Course in Historical Sciences

• La Signora Virginia, Marchesa di Coda-Nunziante, researcher with Professor di Mattei

• Dr Fabio Bernabei, journalist

• Dr Alberto Carosa, journalist

• Mr Edward Pentin, journalist

• Monsieur Guillaume Ferluc, President of the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage Committee

and various clergy and seminarians from Roman Colleges and institutes and various journalists.

Delegation members also attended the book launch of the proceedings of the Sacra Liturgia Conference 2013, in the presence of HE Cardinal Burke, HE Cardinal Sarah, and HE Cardinal Brandmüller.

HE Cardinal Sarah was, that week, appointed Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship.

The Delegation was not able to arrange a meeting with Cardinal Sarah at such short notice but nevertheless was able to present a letter to his Eminence at the offices of the Congregation.

The Delegation also visisted the Aventine Palace of the Knights of Malta as a possible venue for future events of the Federation.

The Delegation also began preparations for the General Assembly 2015 which will be held in late October 2015 in Rome. Further details of the General Assembly 2015 will be forthcoming in due course. Members are, in the meantime, asked to mark their diaries accordingly.

The visit of the Delegation was highly successful in re-establishing contacts in the Holy See and members of the Delelgation were well received at all levels and by all.
