Feast of St Francis of Assisi
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of  Una Voce France

Dear Mr President, Mr Vice-President of Honour, and members of Una Voce France,

The 50th anniversary of Una Voce France is a grand and important occasion for all of us in the International Una Voce Federation and, indeed, in the traditional movement as a whole, world-wide.

I am only sorry that I cannot be present in person to congratulate you all on this magnificent achievement but I send my thanks and best wishes to you all through the good offices of our International Secretary, Mr Thomas Murphy.

We are all aware what we owe to you in Una Voce France and we recognise, again, that it was Una Voce France, together with Dr Borghild Krane of Una Voce Norway, who led the way at the beginning of our Federation in 1964.

As President Patrick Banken has so well reminded us, the Roman rite of liturgy has been a great treasure for the Church but also for our European culture as a whole. In Art, literature, architecture, music and in every way, its influence has been deeply felt. So much so that even an Anglican writer like Dr Catherine Pickstock of Cambridge University in England has felt obliged to admit that the traditional Roman rite is, as she puts it, at the centre of our Western European culture.

As President Banken rightly asks, among the Christians in 1914, on the eve of the First World War that we commemorate this year, who could have imagined that, 50 years later, that sacred liturgy at the heart of our culture would be almost impossible to find in our parish churches, abbeys and cathedrals?

Fortunately, men and women came together here in France in 1964, and elsewhere, to stand up in defence of the most precious treasure of European Christian culture – the traditional Roman rite.

I salute you all, here today at your 50th anniversary, for carrying on that great beginning and that great work. It has already borne fruit with the proclamation of Summorum Pontificum of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, and the huge number of young people here in France, and throughout the world, who are now so enthusiastically committed and devoted to the traditional Roman rite.

The works of men wither and die but the eternal works of the hand of God never die – and the traditional Roman rite is undoubtedly a work of the hand of God. It will not die. We are privileged to be its defenders and protectors.

God bless your work and your 50th anniversary and may I again congratulate you, Mr President and all the members of Una Voce France for this great event and your 50 years of devoted and heroic defence of our sacred rites, our Faith and our Church.

With all good wishes in Christ and the Blessed Virgin,

Colonel James Bogle of Gilmorehill
President
The International Una Voce Federation

  1. M. Claude Pateau, director of Schola Saint Grégoire in Le Mans, leads the schola during the Mass of celebration, not M. Alain Cassagnau, choirmaster.

  2. I confirm M. Claude Pateau is the conductor. Not me.
