We are grateful for the kind words of praise recently penned by Archbishop Thomas E. Gullickson, Nuncio to Ukraine, for our fifth Position Paper, on the Vulgate. These words can be found in his blog post "Three Cheers for St. Jerome".
"Don't miss the "FIUV Position Paper 5: The Vulgate". I read it at RORATE CAELI. It is indeed a masterful piece in every way, but I want to quote a couple paragraphs in particular:
- 6. While the Old Testament of the Neo Vulgate is based on the Masoretic Hebrew text, the Vulgate and the ancient Latin Psalters depend upon the Greek Septuagint translation of the Old Testament. The Instruction Variatates legitimate (1994) describes the Septuagint's production as 'an enrichment of the Scriptures' 'under divine inspiration',[9] a judgment which reflects the consensus of the Fathers.[10] It reflects both a more ancient Hebrew manuscript tradition and a more developed theological understanding, than the Hebrew versions directly available to us. It is noteworthy that it is used in the New Testament, in some cases precisely because of its variance with the Hebrew.[11] It was the Septuagint which was the basis of Scriptural commentary and exegesis by the Greek Fathers, and by using Latin translations based on the Septuagint, Latin Fathers and Doctors were able to work in continuity with them.
- 7. In short, the Septuagint translators' own reading of the Old Testament forms a key link in a tradition of interpretation adopted and developed further by the New Testament authors and the Fathers, Doctors, and scholars of the Church right up to modern times. It is this tradition of interpretation which is reflected in the liturgical use made of the Old Testament, especially the Psalms, in the ancient Latin liturgical tradition.
- 8. The importance of the 'entire tradition of the Latin Church' is referred to in the passage of Sacrosanctum Concilium quoted above, and is reaffirmed emphatically in Liturgiam authenticam: 'The effort should be made to ensure that the translations be conformed to that understanding of biblical passages which has been handed down by liturgical use and by the tradition of the Fathers of the Church, especially as regards very important texts such as the Psalms and the readings used for the principal celebrations of the liturgical year; in these cases the greatest care is to be taken so that the translation express the traditional Christological, typological and spiritual sense, and manifest the unity and the inter-relatedness of the two Testaments.'[12]
I cannot remember ever seeing such a succinct and eloquent explanation of the importance of the Septuagint in the life of the Church and its liturgy. This Position Paper adds much to what we need to mean when we are talking about the hermeneutic of continuity."

This address 'Is the Traditional Movement the Remedy for the Crisis in the Church' was given in Poland on April 9, 2011 by the current President of FIUV, Mr. Leo Darroch. As we move into the fifth year of the implementation of Summorum Pontificum and as interest in the Vatican - SSPX talks continues, this talk is more relevant than ever in explaining the importance of the movement for the Traditional Latin Mass to the cause of the revival of the Church as a whole, in line with the calls of Pope Benedict XVI for a "New Evangelization".

FIUV Position Papers on the 1962 Missal
FIUV launches discussion papers on the 1962 Missal The Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce (FIUV) is launching a series of short 'position papers' on aspects of the 1962 Missal, with a view to stimulating debate on aspects of the 'Extraordinary Form' which have been criticised in the past, and might be subject to change in the future.
We have a two-fold goal. First, to contribute to a debate, which has been on-going since at least the mid 20th Century, about the theological appropriateness and pastoral effectiveness of (what is now, in the Holy Father's phrase) 'the former liturgical tradition'. We wish to equip those attached to this tradition with the best possible arguments, backed by the best authorities, for maintaining the organic integrity of this tradition, expressed as succinctly as possible but, we hope, comprehensible to a wide audience. We hope in this way to raise the standard of debate which takes place no longer only in the seminar room, but wherever Catholics meet, particularly on the internet.
Secondly, we do this in light of the Holy Father's letter to Bishops accompanying the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum:
- For that matter, the two Forms of the usage of the Roman Rite can be mutually enriching: new Saints and some of the new Prefaces can and should be inserted in the old Missal. The "Ecclesia Dei" Commission, in contact with various bodies devoted to the usus antiquior, will study the practical possibilities in this regard.
The FIUV is not merely one among many 'bodies devoted to the EF', but is the only international body able to speak for the laity attached to this form of the liturgy. We were established in 1965, at the very beginning of the 'Traditional Movement', and represent a large and growing number of lay associations in North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. We have been representing the views and needs of our member associations in Rome, and to the wider world, for nearly half a century.

Pilgrimage to the Holy Tunic in Trier, Germany.
The Bishop of Trier, His Excellency Dr. Stephan Ackermann, has extended an invitation for the period of April 13th to May 13th, 2012 for a major pilgrimage to the Holy Tunic in Trier. The theme of the pilgrimage is: "Bring Together What Is Divided". During these four weeks, up to one million pilgrims are expected in Trier.
The occasion of the pilgrimage will be the first-ever public viewing of the Holy Tunic in this century. The last time that the Holy Tunic was publicly viewed was in 1996, when the relic was exhibited for only the third time in the 20th century (the previous expositions took place on 1959 and 1933.)The pilgrimage of all communities, parishes and groups that are attached to the traditional Latin liturgy (the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite) is scheduled on the weekend of April 20th to April 22nd, 2012. At the pilgrimage of these communities, all liturgies will be celebrated according to the Extraordinary Form.
The highlights of the pilgrimage will be on Saturday, April 21st, 2012, when the following will take place:
At 10:00 am: Solemn Pontifical Mass in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite in St. Maximin (Maximinstraße); Celebrant: His Eminence Walter Cardinal Brandmüller, Rome. Liturgical ministry: Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter.
Afterwards: a solemn procession across the City of Trier to the Dome, where the Holy Robe of Jesus is exposed to the faithful; Veneration of the Holy Robe.
At 4:30 pm: Solemn Pontifical Vespers with Eucharistic Adoration at St. Maximin. Celebrant also: His Eminence Walter Cardinal Brandmüller. Liturgical ministry: Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.
Full details are shown in the attached file.
The organizer of the pilgrimage for the communities attached to the traditional Latin liturgy, Fr. Nikolaus Gorges FSSP, asks that the faithful of these communities "come in great numbers".

For more than 40 years the members of the International Federation have travelled to Rome to plead the cause for the restoration of the traditional liturgy. The International Federation Una Voce Welcomes Four New Members.
The International Federation Una Voce is pleased to announce the admission of four new members. The Federation Council has approved applications from:
- Una Voce Albaruthenia (Belarus),
- Una Voce Natal (Brazil),
- Una Voce Cuba,
- Una Voce Ucraina (Ukraine).
Since the promulgation of the motu prorio Summorum Pontificum in July 2007 the Federation has admitted twelve new associations: from Malta, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile - Casablanca, Philippines, Japan, Portugal, and now the four associations named above. We are also in active discussions with another five groups in Latin America and two in Asia. What is especially encouraging is that all these groups are being formed and led by energetic young people who have found in the traditional liturgy a spirituality they have not been able to find elsewhere. This is our hope for the future in that young lay people will be working with young clergy and religious to ensure that the traditions of the Church will be preserved and fostered.
The first President of the International Federation Una Voce, Dr Eric de Saventhem, speaking in New York in June 1970, said that the suppression of the traditional Mass had been achieved de facto only and not de jure. It would be unthinkable, he said, for the older form of Mass to be forbidden as one would have to argue that it had been wrong or bad - either doctrinally or pastorally. He thought it perfectly legitimate to ask that the new Ordo Missae should be offered as an additional, alternative way, of celebrating Mass. This was an argument that all the leaders of the International Federation have used regularly when in Rome. The motu proprio Summorum Pontificum has confirmed what Dr de Saventhem said nearly forty years earlier. In his talk he also said:
"A renaissance will come: asceticism and adoration as the mainspring of direct total dedication to Christ will return. Confraternities of priests, vowed to celibacy and to an intense life of prayer and meditation will be formed. Religious will regroup themselves into houses of "strict observance." A new form of "Liturgical Movement" will come into being, led by young priests and attracting mainly young people, in protest against the flat, prosaic, philistine or delirious liturgies which will soon overgrow and finally smother even the recently revised rites.
It is vitally important that these new priests and religious, these new young people with ardent hearts, should find -- if only in a corner of the rambling mansion of the Church -- the treasure of a truly sacred liturgy still glowing softly in the night. And it is our task - since we have been given the grace to appreciate the value of this heritage -- to preserve it from spoliation, from becoming buried out of sight, despised and therefore lost forever. It is our duty to keep it alive: by our own loving attachment, by our support for the priests who make it shine in our churches, by our apostolate at all levels of persuasion."
Everything that Dr de Saventhem prophesied has come to pass. The revised rite of 1970 has indeed been overgrown and smothered by flat and delirious liturgies. For forty years the members of the International Federation have worked unceasingly to keep alive "the truly sacred liturgy" and to prevent it being "buried out of sight, despised, and therefore lost forever". The enquiries being received by the Federation are coming mainly from young people who are not attracted or inspired by these "flat, prosaic, philistine or delirious liturgies" and are welcoming and embracing the venerable usus antiquior of their forefathers. The International Federation Una Voce will continue unceasingly in its work to attract new members and help restore and spread the usus antiquior and the venerable and ancient liturgy of our forbears to our altars.
Leo Darroch, President - Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce.

Third Conference on the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum
The International Federation Una Voce has been asked to publicise a very important conference which is taking place in Rome on the weekend of 13 to 15 May 2011. It is being organised by Fr Vincenzo Nuara, O.P. of the association Youth and Tradition and is being supported by officials of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, the FSSP, the ICRSP, and the Franciscans of the Immaculate.
The official programme (in Italian) is here and here with an English translation here.. Fr Nuara, O.P. has worked wonders in assembling such a programme, and the rich array of high profile speakers indicates the level of support for his conference.
This is a very important conference, culminating as it does in a Pontifical Mass at the Faldstool in St Peter’s Basilica, celebrated by His Eminence Antonio Cardinal Cañizares Llovera.
The costs incurred in arranging such a programme are quite heavy and donations would be gratefully received.

A report by Katerina Lavrinenko, with photos
- 11 June 2010
Traditional Latin Mass workshop for Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian priests in Vitebsk, Belarus – 13 to 17 July 2010.
Mr. Oleg Michael Martynov of Una Voce Russia (and Una Voce Council member) reports that the region’s first official workshop for priests who want to obtain or improve their knowledge of how to say Holy Mass in the extraordinary form (usus antiquor, or the so-called Tridentine Mass) will be held in Vitebsk, Belarus, on July 13 to 17, 2010. The workshop, taught by Fr. Ivo Ounpuu of the Apostolic Administration of Estonia, will be a joint effort of Una Voce Albaruthenia (Belarus), Una Voce Russia, and the parish of St. Barbara Cathedral in Vitebsk. The parish, served by the Dominican Fathers, features Holy Masses in the extraordinary form (Roman Rite) three times a week, being the first such place in Belarus.
Participation will be free of charge for the priests, including accommodation and meals. Every priest in good standing, Latin or Eastern biritualist, is welcome (the main focus is on priests who serve in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine). The workshop will be taught in Polish with simultaneous translation into Russian.
The Bishop of Vitebsk, Mgr. Wladislaw Blin, has granted his blessing to the event, and Mgr. Athanasius Schneider, O.R.C., the Auxiliary Bishop of Karaganda (Kazakhstan), will celebrate a Pontifical Mass during the workshop. Those willing to take part in the workshop are asked to contact the organizers:
email: seminar.for.priests@gmail.com phones: +7-963-657-0452 (in Moscow) +375-29-368-20-90 (in Vitebsk).
N.B: Priests who are not Belarusian, Russian, or Ukrainian citizens should contact the organizers as soon as possible in order to obtain Belarusian entry visa in time.
Leo Darroch writes: This training workshop is a wonderful example of collaboration between a number of groups which has the blessing of the local bishop. The organisers are praying that some kind benefactors may help them with the expenses that are being incurred; particularly as the priests are being given free accommodation and meals. If you would like to help please send a donation via our ‘Donate’ button and say it is for the Belarus training.
